Screening for Hepatitis B: El Camino Hospital Health Fair

With a large demographic of Asian American Pacific Islanders, El Camino Hospital was able to successfully organize an outreach event on March 9, 2013, providing free health screening for osteoporosis, hypertension, and Hepatitis B in Santa Clara, California. During the health fair, 300 individuals were screened, 97 of which were tested for Hepatitis B. Such a turnout makes the event a worthwhile effort for the growing outreach arm of El Camino in Mountain View, California. In addition to these free tests, the hospital also offered educational lectures about Hepatitis B prevention, and “Ask-A-Doctor” booths that allowed participants to ask certain questions to a forum of doctors practicing in the hospital.

Our chapter collaborated with the hospital in the past to bring about more health screenings in the Santa Clara County. On March 9th, our chapter volunteered to register, provide information, and assist patients coming in for health screenings andeducation. Information booths were also offered in Mandarin and Cantonese. This holistic approach to outreach won the event great praise in the Asian American population.
