About
Who we are
Team HBV, the official chapters of the Asian Liver Center, is dedicated to raising awareness of the disproportionately high incidence of hepatitis B (HBV) and liver cancer among the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. We currently have chapters at UC Berkeley, Cornell University and Duke University.
Why we fight
- 1 in 10 Asians and Asian Americans is infected with hepatitis B (HBV) for life.
- Due to a lack of symptoms, many DO NOT KNOW they are infected, giving HBV its nickname: “silent killer”.
- Hepatitis B, a completely preventable disease, causes 80% of all primary liver cancer cases worldwide.
- In the US, the minority status of APIs means this silent epidemic is grossly overlooked.
What we do
- Organize campus and community-wide events to raise awareness of this silent epidemic
- Promote the international Jade Ribbon Campaign in China
- Strengthen support for the National HBV Bill in Congress
- Cultivate skills in community organizing, leadership, political advocacy, and event planning
